I always make sure that I am drinking enough water during the day.  Staying hydrated is one of my key steps to staying healthy and feeling great.

I have my students wipe down their desks every other day with Clorox wipes.  I asked parents to send them in with their child at the beginning of flu season and explained what they would be used for.  Parents LOVED the idea and had no problems sending in more than one canister with their child.

I agree with Amanda about the Clorox wipes. We had our students bring them as well. They love being responsible each day and wiping down their own desk. Plus, it helps me out too and makes your classroom smell great!

Boo hoo, our district will not allow use of any kind of wipes that have chemcals in them in the classrooms. That leaves it up to our custodians to wipe down surfaces after school with disinfectant, and it's pretty obvious it isn't getting done. We do have Purell sanitizer dispensers in each classroom (don't know why that's OK in lieu of the wipes!) so that should help somewhat.

We place bottles of hand sanitizer all around the school.

a fun activity is to fill a plastic bag (sandwich size) with confetti and air.  twist the top so it is tight, pretend to sneeze and pop the bag.  the confetti gets all over the place! just like our germs.  the kids are grossed out and it gets to the point!

Thanks for the added tips!  I ask the students to cover their mouth with their shoulder/arm portion of their body.  That helps shield the germs.  I also hydrate myself, eat well, stretch every morning and night and wash hands consistently.

Would your district allow you to have all-natural cleansing wipes in the classroom?  Method makes all-surface wipes that are made from all plant derived products, are pretty inexpensive, and smell nice on top of it.  I'm allergic to some cleaning chemicals, so I use these instead and they work pretty great.  

Burt's Bees makes a great, Aloe and Witch Hazel, natural hand sanitizer spray that fits easily in a purse or a desk drawer.  It smells wonderful and dries quickly.

I keep a large bottle af hand sanitizer on my bookshelf. As the students entr my classroom, they squirt a little bit on their hands. I take vitamins, excercise, and try to get enough rest so that I can stay well. I also keep a clorox wipes in my class to clean my desk.

In order to say healthy I wash my hands more often. I keep sanitizer on my desk, at the podium, and near my computer. I use a sanitizer spray in the room to kill germs. I talk to my students about healthy habits to follow when they feel sick. I try to use organic products so that I do not end up with another problem by using too many chemicals.

I always wash my hands and try to get a ton of sleep.  It seems to be easier to go to bed early for my kids since daylight savings time, so we are all getting a little bit more sleep.  If you are tired, your defenses are down and then you tend to get sick quicker.

Great suggestions.  I agree having students wipe down their desks, even with soap and water from the restroom keeps the germs at bay.  It also gives students a chance to "take charge" of their area and have some responsibility in taking good care of each other and themselves.  As for yourself, remember to not touch your face with your hands and drink plenty of water.

At our school we have special hand washing procedures.  When students was their hands they have been taught to sing "Happy Birthday" twice before rinsing.  We also use alcohol based sanitizer throughout the day.  It is supposedly effective against H1N1.  Signs have been posted that we are a GERM FREE area and administration is making sure parents understand that no child who is sick can come to school until their fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication.  We encourage and teach our kids to eat healthy, get good sleep, and stay away from sick friends or siblings!  

As a nursing instructor at our local technical college, my students and I are constantly exposed to all kinds of things...the H1N1 virus included.  Handwashing certainly is the best thing you can do, and do it frequently!  We also use the hand gels for times inbetween patients and other tasks.  The hand gels are anti-bacterial, so they won't help with the viruses.  Staying home when you are sick, staying away from those who are sick, and WASHING your hands are the best things to do.  Also, get the vaccine if/when it is available!

As for the flu, keep hand sanitizer on your desk and give it to your students often.  Ask your janitor to order Re-juvenal and put it on all hard surfaces for 10 min. and wipe off - great flu fighter!

First off, H1N1 is the flu!!!!!!! It is not more deadly than the regular flu. Infact, the regular flu kills about 30,000 americans a year. H1N1 has killed what.....less than 100 so far. Also, vaccines are more dangerous than getting the actual flu. When swine flu first came out in the 70's more people died from the vaccine than the acctual flu. The vaccine's contain mercury and formaldahyde in them. Seriously, why would you inject these awful toxins into your body??? Mercury poisoning is connected with autism and autism like behaviors. Beware what the media is telling you. Do your research.

If you do your research, you'll find that the actual "30,000" a year that die from the flu actually die from other complications including pnemonia.  I am so thankful for the opportunity to stay and have access to the so much information!  We just have to do our homework when it comes to media reporting.

I have another fun activity to do with your students. Our fifth grade team uses it to show how easily germs spread. We teach it in concordance with strategies for staying healthy. It is very simple.

Take a pencil and cover it with glue. Then, cover the glue with green glitter. Let it dry. The next day, explain to the students that the pencil is covered in germs (green glitter) and that you are going to pass it around the classroom to demonstrate the spread of germs. As each student holds the pencil, it is inevitable that they are left with some green glitter. Afterwards, discuss the spread of germs with the class and how to prevent it.

At the end of the day  on FridaysI disinfect common areas with Lysol such as the pencil sharpener, book bins, books, etc. I also keep lots of tissue boxes around and allow them to wash  hands as needed. Each Friday I pass out disinfecting wipes and  we thoroughly clean our desks. If I forget, they remind me. They are always amazed at how much dirt the wipe has on it after a week. But I'm not flu phobic either. I don't try to scare them to death. As a matter-of-fact, there was a milder bug going thru our school. Lots of teachers and students were sick for a few days during the last month or so.

We also make it a habit to ripe off desks/tables with sanitized wipes usually on Friday but any day that time permits. It teaches kids the importance of cleanliness and that we all have to work together to keep the germs away.

I do believe the H1N1 scare has been just that...a media scare.  I am not flu phobic and am not convinced that a once a week Clorox sanitation routine will prevent the flu.  I do certainly believe it will improve the cleanliness of our often disgusting classrooms.  I do, however, ask my 4th graders to sneeze into their elbows to prevent the spread of germs and have them wash regularly with soap and/or hand sanitizer. :-)  I take Airborne at the first sign of a cold or flu and get more sleep!  Could be a placebo, but, seems to work!

We have a few areas we have been improving.  We have added cups by our water fountains along with a garbage. No child should be drinking from the water fountain.  My own children carry a small spray bottle they can carry in their pocket or back pack filled with sanitizer.  They like the idea of spraying a small amount into their hands.  Additionally when a child coughs or sneezes they are either excused to wash their hands or use the sanitizer.  We have a smaller school so this work easier than a large one.

As the guidance counselor, teacher, and school nurse of a K-12 school, I am constantly challenged with keeping students of all ages healthy.  To help me on my quest, our high school science and health students performed puppet shows, demonstrations, and created artistic posters on hand washing and hygiene for our younger students.  It’s been a group effort, but has worked wonders!

I always like to use anti-bacterial lotion so that my hands don't remain dry from all of the washing and hand-sanitizing!  Bath and Body Works has several different kinds, and I always keep one in my desk.

Everyday we remind our students to wash their hands on our morning announcements. Our teachers are really good about reminding the kids!

These flu germs are peskier than usual.  I'm a PE Teacher, teaching outside all day (no gym).  I have always teased that the germs blow by in the wind and I've never been fever/fluish in 20 years.  This year seems to be different!!  10 days of "stuff" and holding.

I do keep hand sanitizer, tissues and lots of water on my sound system cart for the kiddos and me. We sneeze in our elbows, but I know that after 7 classes of 50 kiddos handling equipment there will be a few transfers.

You are all absolutely correct...hand sanitizer is a must!  

I am constantly telling my kids to keep their hands out of their mouths! They do it without knowing but we are constantly washing hands, sneezing in elbows, and using lots of hand sanitizer! :)

Even I require my students to use hand sanitizer though in my case it is just as easy to have them wash their hands. Guess that is the benefit of being a science teacher and having sinks in the room.

Being a teacher with lil ones can be difficult during the cold and flu season. I find that someone always has a cold, but it's even worse during flu season. My school is offering the H1N1 vaccine and only three out of twenty four students have signed up for it. As a teacher I try to teach my first graders about not sharing their germs and the proper way to sneeze. I keep tons of hand sanitizer in my classroom, and lots of clorox wipes for cleaning up. I keep myself healthy with vitamins, and getting enough sleep. Your body will thank you when it's rested.

Working with elementary students it is vital to have them wash their hands PROPERLY before eating lunch...not using hand sanitizer.  Nothing like soap and warm water to make clean hands that will be handling the food that will be going into your mouth to keep you healthy.

I teach 2nd grade and we have some tips and practices that we use all the time in our classroom:

1) HAND SANITIZER (every child gets some on the way to lunch)

2) Keep your hands out of your mouth and away from your nose and eyes

3) Cover your cough and sneeze (in your shoulder)

4) HAND SANITIZER

5) Each Friday, we take a Clorox wipe and clean the desks, chairs, tables, anything that can handle a Clorox wipe!

6) Did I mention HAND SANITIZER

7) If you are very sick, stay home

I use clorox wipes, spray lysol each afternoon and make the children use hand gel each time they sneeze, suck a thumb, or touch their nose or mouth.  I also keep my classroom temperature low--around 67 degrees.  The kids freeze, but it has helped with germs and children with asthma!

Look into a product by Young Living Essential Oils.  It is an all natural, no chemical way to clean and sanitize anything. If you are open minded and willing to try something that is healthier and better for your body try it. I am hooked and typically each year the children in my classroom are always healthier!  Thieves Cleaner!!!

I am Spanish teacher for elementary, and middle school.  This year one of was goal is safety, and hygiene for the students.  I taught them how to cover  their mouth when they cough, also I use this routine every day with every class:  They say, "manos", which means hands, then I gave Hand Sanitizer to them, they answer back.  !Gracias! which means Thank you!, and then I say: "De Nada", which means You Welcome!, in this way, I taught the Spanish language, and at the same time taught them how to prevent get sick with any virus. I have a 'no butts about it' sickness policy. If you are sick in class, you get a pass to the clinic, and the nurses will decide how sick you are and whether or not you should go home. Many students today are very overloaded and overstressed with school work, tests, and extracurricular activities to the point they are often afraid to miss school. They often need to be reminded that if they miss a test for a valid reason, it will be there waiting for them when they return. Their heath, and the heath of everyone around them, is more important. (After they leave, I wipe down their desk, chair, and the doorknob with a clorox wipe...)

I make sure that all my students wash their hand after each activity.  It is important that young kindergarten students understand how germs are passed.  Lots of tissues and paper towels are available in my room.

This is fantastic!  Don't touch the office door handle.  It's a cesspool of germs.

Handwashing is the best defense!

We have lots of little kids touching the computers all day, every day. We dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol, distribute the cotton ball to each child, and the child wipes down the mouse and keyboard. They think this is great fun! While keeping things sanitary, it also teaches them a safe way to care for the equipment.

Get outside and play in the fresh air.  My students and I run laps around the playground a couple times a week after lunch.  We log our miles and get rewards for meeting certain milestones (PTA sponsors the program).  It helps keep the kids off the grimy, germ-infested playground apparatus and playground balls.  Also I keep baby wipes in the room which are better than nothing since we're not allowed to give them hand sanitizer!

I am a new shopper at ATL and I love it.

I teach kindergarten, and our key defense is sanitizing and hand washing.  Tables are sprayed and cleaned throughout the day, pencils and markers are sanitized, along with other toys periodically. We also spray the water fountains, door knobs, and sink handles.  Kids learn to cough and sneeze into their arm and anytime they don't, or they "pick" their nose, etc...they have to wash hands.  We also wash hand before and after lunch, after recess, after special areas, before and after playing in the water table, with playdough and so forth.  So far this year, we are the only class that hasn't had the anyone with the flu.

Each child at our school uses a hands-free hand sanitizer automatic pump as they enter the cafeteria. It is a great idea for germ-free dining and the kids love it!

what about the nurses!  a large amt of nursing is also teaching,and like teaching it is hard work.

I have been teaching for 6 years and love it!  So good to be able to wake up in the morning and go to a job that I love!  

I work in a High School which is very challenging. Reminding them to use a tissue please !! Cover your mouth please!!

They do listen but I always offer the hand sanitizer as a precaution, and they gladly accept.

I think that teachers and people who work in the health department should also get the H1N1 vaccine. We are more vulnerable in contracting this virus than other people from other jobs.  This is my opinion.  What do you think?  Wash your hands frequently or use a hand sanitizer.  Stay home if you're sick.  Exercise, eat healthy, get lots of sleep.  Thank you for validating and supporting what we do.

Personally, enough rest I think is vital.  In the classroom, I swear by Oust!  I give a quick spray in between each class period.  I also use wipes on the desks daily.  An alternative is to put water and antibacterial dish soap in a spray bottle and give the desks a quick shot and have students wipe with paper towels.  Much cheaper than wipes, too!  Lastly, I make sure kids know it's ok to stay home if sick.  In my school, kids get sent to school often when they should have been kept at home.  I send them to the nurse and ask that she sees they return home where they can get better and not make the rest of us sick.

Stress hand washing and using hand sanitizer!

I up the vitamin C intake during just prior to flu season.  At snack time in first grade, I drink the individual bottle/cartons of ornage juice.  It gives me energy and is good role modeling for class than seeing me sip coffee or soda.  It seems to help my sinus issues!

Coughing or sneezing into your arm (opposite your elbow) helps prevent germs from spreading.  When we were little, we thought we were good if we just remembered to cover our mouths.. not good enough anymore!  :)  This way we don't touch doornobs, classroom items, or each other, with germ-ridden hands.  Also, right afterwards, the kids know to go straight for the germ-x.

I am drinking plenty of water, constantly putting hand sanitizer on, and i make my kids use it too.  not to mention I had the H1N1 shot and our health department is offering it to our students tomorrow!

Remember to work out, take vitamins and wash those hands - but more than anything try to take time everyday to do one thing for yourself - take some time for yourself and destress! Yoga, a healthy diet and a positive attitude do the trick for me!

I have 3 strategies for staying healthy and well: Maintain a healthy balance in exercise, nutrition, learning/work, and fun/family-time, wash hands thoroughly & frequently, and use Airborne at the 1st sign of not feeling well.

Sweating regularly, always staying hydrated, restful sleep, and lots of love!

I make sure I take all my multivitamins to be able to keep up with all my duties, and at the same time be able to keep my self healthy.

I'm on maternity leave now, so I don't know how school is handling the situation, but weirdly enough in the spring only my class was hit with 8 cases of something during the swineflu outbreak. They were not confirmed but all 8 of them had high fever for 4-5 days. I ended up taking off a day by advice of my dr.

I make sure to have all my students rub the sanitizing gel betweeh their hands until it dries.  If you don't rub it until it dries, you just transfer the sanitizer to the first item you touch and you aren't protected any longer.  It does take a minute or so, but it is worth the time spent to get the protection working for them and me!  I also use new sanitizer on my hands each time they return a borrowed pen, pencil, calculator, etc. because even though I had them use the sanitizer, they have since touched their face, mouth, nose and transfer of new germs could be on the item.  Precautions, precautions, precautions...they take time, but they do pay off for all of us, students and teachers alike.

In my class a provide students with positive comments when they cough/sneeze into their sleeve; this promotes awareness and have seen this behavior increase in my class so they too can be recognized for their actions.  My students wash their hands frequently too.

Reminding kids to wash hands & rest up is the best advice.

For 5 home work points, my students are invited to bring in a box of tissues in September.  We never run out, all year long!

I too bought a huge bottle of hand sanitizer from Sam's Club.  I have encouraged my students to use it.  We also use Clorox wipes to wipe off the tops of our tables.

Remind parents that they should keep their sick children home until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication.  If we can keep the sick/contagious kids home we can help stop the spread of flu.  That means teachers, too!

We ran into the chemical problem in our district too. They only want their own disinfectants used, which leaves us high and dry during the day, so I asked our custodian to put some of the disinfectant in a spray bottle and I use their chemicals. We are a high school, but germs are just as prevalent, probably more so, because we have 150 bodies a day running through the class rooms!

We require that our students wash their hands after each activity, before and after each meal, and after recess. The tables are washed down after each activity and meal aswell and at the end of the day tables and chairs are sprayed down with bleach. We also practice the correct way to sneeze and cough and the students are praised for doing it the correct way. Our numbers in our classroom seem to be high in lue of the flue season. I hope this helps.

We are keeping hand sanitizers in every classroom at our local college to help minimize the spread of germs. Also, our moto is if you got the flu - stay home!

Every classroom has hand sanitizer and along with that the staff is in full support of if you are sick to stay home until you are healthy. It has been working so far for at least me!

I teach 8th grade special needs and had the students establish "Anti-flu" guidelines.  They selected five of the most important and creted  posters in MS Publisher that were posted in our classroom and outside the door.

I teach middle school social studies, so the first student gets the clorox wipes and stands at the door and passes them out as each student comes in. I use to do it at the end of class but I would forget, this is easier. The last person to come in gets the garbage can and collects the wipes. So now they running now to be last.  Hee Hee

I teach the second grade and have found that instead of the children coming up to sharpen pencils I do it for them..I also wipe each one down with a clorox wipe once daily for both of us to be protected...germs are everywhere with this flu! It's help cut down on the amount of germs being passed around . It works~ karen M.

Spray the locker handles with Lysol before the students arrive. They've been wiping their noses on the bus and that's the first thing they touch.

I know hand sanitizer is quicker, but when possible, use real soap. It kills more germs.

My school district has put hand sanatizer everywhere. Teachers model good hygiene such as constant hand washing, sneezing and coughing into tissue or elbow, ect. so that students can imitate. Also, I wipe things down in my classroom daily with Clorox wipes.

I teach 700 K-5 music students each week and we go thru a box of tissues each day! I ask classroom teachers to each donate 1 box of tissues they get from parents so I don't have to buy them with my money. I also was told by my doctor that if we all wash our hair each night it would help us stay healthier. Droplets of saliva stick to our hair folicles. If we put our dirty hair on our pillow cases, we inhale the germs we have collected that day! Yuck!

To keep the flu away I tried all of the above, well almost. It didn't seem to help as so far 11of the 21 have had some form of flu! Most of them have younger siblings who were sick first though. On the upside DE offered every school age kid a free H1N1 vaccine given in the schools.

When a student has a runny nose which they blow constantly I give them their own tissue box (kids bring in at the beginning of the year) and a plastic grocery bag to keep at there desk. They are to keep the bag closed and at the end of the day or if it fills tie the ends and put it in the trash.

For me I go to the Y before school at least 2 weekdays and on the weekends, drink tons of water and wash my hands constantly. I have a sink in the classroom which is helpful.  A rule in my class is you can't use my trash can...this would be the one that sits near my desk. I don't want all those germy tissues next to me!

I live in California and we're not allowed to use wipes or cleaners near the kids anymore. Since our custodians don't always do a satisfactory job, I keep baby wipes in my classroom. If they're safe enough for a baby, they're safe enough for our kids. Even though they don't disinfect the same way as Chlorox wipes, I think they do plenty on their own!

This is wonderful-a partnership that helps us all.

Wash wash wash!  Hand washing is vital to our health these days! My son told me that they did not ever wash their hands before lunch and I was mortified! I needless to say got him some handsanitized to at least cut back on the germs!

Classroom helpers wipe down computer keyboards, door knobs and handles, light switches and faucet handles with Clorox Wipes in the morning and after lunch.

We are not allowed to use Clorox wipes. I love them too and so do the children. However, it is against some health and safty code that the state has established. I have been told not to use them and place them out of reach of the chidlren.

My kinder students are so good about keeping the classroom clean

and especially conscientious about germs.  We have hand sanitizers in every classroom.  For my students it is kept high.  They

all line up after washing their hand and I will help each one get just enough before snack and lunch time.  They are a great bunch of kids.

I don't go crazy with the antibacterial supplies.  We wipe down desks, etc. once a day, keep the room at a cool temperature, and keep a window open to allow fresh air in as much as possible.

I encourage healthy eating, regular exercise and plenty of sleep.  I also teach good personal hygiene.

Wash your hands and don't touch your face.  One word of caution about sanitizer: some students are getting wise to the fact that it contains alcohol and have started eating it.  Yuck, I say but students that want to get high will figure out a way to do it.

I agree with the hand sanitizer comment about being cautious - especially with little ones. Eating a healthy diet and taking probiotics is what I do with my family. It is much easier to ward off the flu if you have a healthy immune system.
